Teen Adventure Camp - 7am-5:30pm = $120
Program Notes: Last summer, the Westbrook Community Center put together a Teen Adventure Camp targeted towards teenagers in grades 6, 7, 8 and 9. The premise of the program was to provide campers with an experience that was geared towards their age, maturity and interest. They did appealing expeditions like trips to Emerald Pool and Magic Falls for whitewater rafting. The program tried to gauge their every-day activities around the need for ‘independence’, yet still have the supervision piece that is necessary. We'd like to give you better detail about what we are planning to do for Teen Adventure Camp this summer. First and foremost is to design and carry out a camp that has teens outside and involved in every-day adventures – such as Cairn’s Leadership School, kayaking and hiking. We still plan to do community service at the free lunch site on Reserve Street and engage in games and activities at the fields and outdoor pool. Because of space issues at the Westbrook Community Center, we decided to find a space for teenagers, and thus approached Mission Possible Teen Center about utilizing their space for some of our activities and as a possible ‘base camp’. Campers would have a defined, dedicated space there that would allow them to utilize a full kitchen, meet in an air-conditioned space that is centrally located so we can walk to some of our adventures and, at times, utilize their computer lab and ping pong tables. Mission Possible IS a drop-in center for teenagers in Westbrook. However, Teen Adventure Camp is a supervised, separate program from that. Counselors, led by Tyler Crosby as the Teen Adventure Camp Supervisor, will be with the campers and will supervise all programming. Campers won’t be utilizing the Teen Center as a ‘drop-in’ facility. In fact, the drop-in center is not open until 12:00pm and our programming will have us out of the building by that time. The plan is to start camp each morning at the WCC, bus or walk down to Mission Possible at 8:30am, make breakfast as a group in their kitchen, and go over the day's Road Map. At the end of the day, campers can be picked up at either MPTC, the WCC or the Outdoor Pool, depending on the schedule for that day. Breakfast, lunch and snacks for campers will be provided each day. Held at Westbrook Community Center & Mission Possible Teen Center. Instructors: Certified WCC staff.
