Kettlebells

Jeni Menendez's Kettlebell Fitness class will run every Monday and Wednesday in the Westbrook Community Center Media Center. Participants can enter the building through the right-side entrance near the Westbrook Historical Society.

Kettlebells are cast iron weights, ranging from 5-lbs. to over 100-lbs., shaped like a ball with a handle for easy gripping. No kettlebells are needed; they will be supplied at each class.

Kettlebells offer a different kind of training using dynamic moves targeting almost every aspect of fitness – endurance, strength, balance, agility and cardio endurance. People love it because it's challenging, efficient and you only need one piece of equipment.

The idea is to hold the kettlebell in one or both hands and go through a variety of swings, presses or pulling motions. Some movements have you changing the weight from hand to hand as the weight swings up or as you move laterally, requiring you to stabilize the body and engage the core in a whole new way. Other moves require power from the legs and hips to move the weight, giving you integrated whole body movements that are often missing with other types of training.

The drop-in fee for Kettlebells is just $5 per class, or you can purchase a multiple-session punch pass at a discounted rate. Classes are open to both residents and non-residents. Payment for drop-in participants is due before each class. Cash or checks made out to City of Westbrook are accepted.

Menendez is an energetic individual who believes in living an active and healthy lifestyle. She enjoys sharing fitness and motivation with others through group exercise.

Her instructing journey began four years ago when she was asked to instruct water aerobics classes for her local YMCA. Last winter, she received her kettlebell instructor certification and began teaching classes through Gorham Adult Education and the YMCA at Pineland.

Her other fitness certifications include spinning, personal training, and sports nutrition.
