Soccer - Paper City Summer Soccer Academy

The Paper City Summer Soccer Academy is a hybrid program that combines academic skill retention with on-field training. The Academy, which is open to girls and boys travel and in-house recreational soccer players ages 11-13, will be run by Westbrook High School Boys Varsity Soccer Coach John Morgan and his staff.

Sessions will run twice per week, on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 12:30-5:30 pm, at Westbrook High School, located at 125 Stroudwater Street. Please Note: The Academy will be closed on Wednesday, July 4.

Mondays and Wednesdays
June 25-July 25 (except July 4) – 9 sessions
12:30-5:30 pm

Registration Fee: $63/player (includes t-shirt and pair of shorts)

Tentative Daily Schedule:
- Lunch (BYOL), 12:30-1 pm (WHS Room 211)
- Literacy retention, 1-1:30 pm (WHS Library)
- Numeracy retention , 1:30-2 pm (WHS Library)
- “Chess and Soccer,” 2-2:30 pm (WHS Library)
- Transition and warm-up, 2:30-3 pm (WHS Upper Field)
- Soccer training, 3-5:30 pm (WHS Upper Field)

The literacy component will be a combination of individual reading and writing. Each kid will pick out an independent reading book of his/her choice to read throughout the program. The reading component will also have a small piece of writing in the form of a reading log.

For the literacy piece, they'll have to write a short research paper on the soccer club of their choice. As an incentive, there will be a FIFA '12 video game tourney on the last day in which the kids play as the team they wrote their research paper on.

As for the numeracy, they'll work on math assignments similar to the ones they're working on this year. The goal on the academic piece is to help them retain their academic skills over the course of the summer.

The chess and soccer component will be an introduction to chess, as well as lessons on how soccer and chess are related. The book "Football and Chess" will be used as the basis for that block of time.

Limited to just 20 spaces, so please don’t wait!

Parents should drop-off at the Westbrook High School lower lot, and pick-up at the parking lot for the Upper Field (opposite side of the gymnasium, near the baseball field). Bus transportation from the Westbrook Community Center to the Westbrook High School will be provided for any child enrolled in both programs. The $63 Academy fee is in addition to any other summer camp fees owed to the Westbrook Community Center.
